할시 "방탄소년단과 작업, 인생 최고의 경험…완벽한 사람은 슈가" [엑's 인터뷰]

[엑스포츠뉴스 전아람 기자] 팝스타 할시(Halsey)가 오는 5월 내한공연을 앞두고 인터뷰를 통해 최근 새 앨범 '매닉(Manic)'을 발매한 소감과 한국 팬들에 대한 고마운 마음을 드러냈다.

오는 5월 9일 서울 올림픽공원 올림픽홀에서 단독 내한공연을 펼치는 할시는 지난 17일 세 번째 정규 앨범 '매닉(Manic)'을 발표했다.

할시는 2015년 데뷔 앨범 발표 후 수차례 그래미 시상식(Grammy Awards) 후보에 오르며 차세대 팝스타 대열에 합류했다. 이후 방탄소년단의 히트곡 '작은 것들을 위한 시(Boy With Luv)'에 피처링으로 참여해 국내서도 이름을 알렸다.

이하 할시와의 일문일답.

Q. 최근 새 앨범 'Manic'을 발표했다. 기분이 어떤지?
(Today local time in Korea, your new album MANIC is released and available to stream on all DSPs here! Are you excited as we are?)
 
A. 매우 기쁘다. 이번이 지금까지 앨범 중 가장 큰 규모의 글로벌 릴리즈이다. 나라는 사람의 생각 한 부분을 많은 사람들과 나눌 수 있어 벅차고 감사한 마음이다.
(I’m so excited. This is my biggest global release of an album ever. I’ve more stands all over the world than I ever have. So, it’s so overwhelming and humbling to know that they are going to have this little peek inside my head.)

Q. 이번에 발표한 'Manic' 앨범에 대해 전반적으로 소개해 준다면? (예를 들어 앨범명이 Manic인 이유나 전반적인 분위기, 트랙 순서나, 담겨있는 메시지, 이전 앨범과 다른 점 등). 
(Wondering why the new album is titled ‘MANIC’. Can you tell us about this album? (music making, tracks, message, why more personal compared to the previous albums))
 
A. 너무나 많은 일이 일어나고 있는 인생의 현시점에서 느끼는 수많은 감정들, 20대로 살아간다는 것, 실수들, 나이를 먹었기에 더 무거워진 선택의 결과들과 진정한 사랑을 찾고 있는 나에 대한 앨범이다. 한 개인으로 나는 누구인가에 대한 생각이 담겨 있고, 내 생각이 바뀔 때마다 앨범도 바뀌는 것이 당연하게 느껴졌다. 그래서 이번 앨범에는 많은 다양한 사운드와 스토리가 있고, 앨범을 썼던 당시의 갈팡질팡했던 모습이 고스란히 반영되어 팝, 컨트리 일렉트로닉 등 다양한 장르와 시도를 엿볼 수 있다. (For me, it was about writing about this hectic time in my life where I’m feeling so many emotions, and I’m in my twenties and, I’m making mistakes and now they have more consequences now because I’m older. I’m looking for true love in the world. I’m figuring out who I am as a person, as an individual so, every time I change my mind, it felt right to have the album changed as well. So, the album has many different sounds, many different stories and reflects that indecisive mindset that I felt like I was in where ‘it’s country!’, ‘it’s pop!”, ‘it’s electronic!’ so many things.)
  
Q. 음악적 영감은 주로 어디에서 받는가?
(Where/what/who do you get inspired the most when making music?)
 
A. 내가 만나는 사람이 음악에 영향을 미친다. 팬들도 마찬가지다. 많은 팬들이 나와 비슷한 나이대이기 때문에 그들이 겪고 있는 것과 내가 겪고 있는 것이 서로 얽히고 교차점이 있다는 게 좋다.
(A lot of people I meet have an impact on the music I write. Also, my fans. A lot of them are my age so, it’s nice to think about what they’re going through and what I’m going through intertwine or cross together.)

Q. 과거에 힘든 경험을 많이 한 것으로 알려져 있다. 그 시간들이 당신의 음악에 어떤 영향을 미쳤으며, 음악을 통해 어떤 메시지를 전하고 싶은가?
(In some press interviews, you said there were some rough time for you in the past. How has it influenced your music? And what message do you want to give through the medium of music?)
 
A. 상황이 얼마나 나쁘건 간에 언젠가는 좋아진다는 것, 나 자신이 누군지 몰라도 괜찮다는 것, 그것을 탐구하고 다양한 시도를 해보는 데 시간을 걸려도 괜찮다는 걸 모두 알아주었으면 좋겠다. 창피한 일도 하게 될 것이고, 결과가 좋은 일도 있을 것이다. 그리고 많은 교훈을 얻게 될 것이다. 우리는 모든 것이 완벽해 보이는 SNS의 시대를 살고 있기 때문에 젊은 세대를 위한 음악을 만든다면, 성장한다는 것, 자신이 누군지 알아가는 과정이 그렇게 아름답지 만은 않을 수 있다는 걸 보여주고 싶다. 때로는 그렇게 단순하지 않다.
(I just want everyone to know that no matter how bad it gets it always get better. And, it’s okay to not know who you are. It’s okay to take time to figure it out and to try different things. And you’re going to try some stuff that are embarrassing things, some things that work, and you’re going to learn a lot of lesson. We live in a world where everything looks so perfect on social media. If I make music for young people right now, I want to show them the process of growing up and figuring out who you are isn’t as always as beautiful as it looks to be. Sometimes, it’s more complicated than that.)

Q. 저스틴 비버(Justin Bieber), 체인스모커스(The Chainsmokers), 방탄소년단 등 여러 아티스트들과 협업을 하고 또 크게 성공했다. 당신에게 협업은 어떠한 의미가 있는지, 적극적으로 협업하는 이유가 궁금하다. 그리고 방탄소년단과 협업으로 한국에서 반응이 매우 뜨거웠다. 이번 앨범에 수록된 ‘SUGA’s Interlude’에 대한 관심이 많다. 슈가와 협업하게 된 배경과 과정을 얘기해 줄 수 있는가?
(You have collaborated with artists like Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers and not to mention BTS. How do you feel about these collaborations? Your recent collaboration with BTS for Boy With Luv was loved by everyone in Korea. Tell us how you went about working with SUGA for SUGA’s Interlude.)
 
A. 굉장히 재미있다. 내 곡에 시도를 하기 전에 새로운 사운드를 실험할 수 있는 계기가 된다. 저스틴 비버와 체인스모커스와는 내가 팝 스타일의 곡들을 쓰기 시작하기 전에 협업했었다. 콜라보는 생각지도 못한 시도와 결과물을 낳기도 한다. 최근 퓨처(Future)와 함께 포스트 말론(Post Malone) 앨범에 피처링을 했는데, 이런 생각 지도 못한 조합은 내면의 새로운 인격을 찾아내게 한다. 방탄소년단과 작업은 인생 최고의 경험 중 하나였다. 그들은 너무나 상냥하고 똑똑하고 재능 있다. 이 작업을 통해 새로운 친구들을 사귈 수 있었다. ‘작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy With Luv)’ 뮤직비디오 촬영차 한국에 왔었는데 그때 한국에서 시간을 보내며 방탄소년단이 어떻게 음악을 만들고 뮤직비디오를 찍는지를 볼 수 있었다. 댄스를 비롯하여 모든 것에 완벽을 기하는 자세는 내가 만드는 예술에도 그런 완벽성을 기해야겠다는 의지를 다지게 해주었다. 물론 각각의 멤버들도 더 잘 알게 되고, 각자의 성격과 관심사 등도 알게 됐는데, 슈가와 콜라보라 그렇게 성사되었다. 왠지 그의 솔로 음악 ‘Agust D’에 많은 공감이 되었다. 사적인 내면의 생각과 어두운 면들, 아티스트와 개인을 오가는 고뇌가 고스란히 전달되었다. 그래서 그 곡을 들었을 때, 이번 앨범에 반드시 슈가와 협업을 해야겠다고 생각했다. 사람들은 어쩌면 다른 멤버와의 협업을 먼저 떠올렸을 수도 있을 것 같다. 나와 좀 더 보이스 색깔이 비슷한 멤버나 영어가 능통한 RM과 하지 않을까 생각한 분도 있겠지만, 내 마음속에 이 곡에 완벽한 사람은 언제나 슈가였다. 그와 협업할 수 있어서 정말 기뻤다.
(It’s really fun for me because it lets me experiment with the sound before I decide if I want to do it for myself or not. I worked with Justin Bieber or The Chainsmokers before I had ever started making pop music for the radio. So, when I did it with them, it kinda prepared me to do. It also does a lot of different things. I’m featured on Post Malone album with Future. I never thought me, Future and Post Malone would have a song together. It lets me pick on a new personality, and I become a different kind of Halsey. And working with BTS was one of the best experiences of my life. They are so kind and so smart and so talented. I got to have so many new friends. I flew to Korea to film the music video for ‘Boy With Luv’ and got to spend some time there which was amazing, and see how they work and how they make music video, how dedicated they are to dancing and making sure everything is perfect. It definitely inspired me to maintain that kind of dedication with my art as well. And obviously, I got to know all of them individually, their own personalities and interests. That’s how I ended up having SUGA on the album. Because his solo music really spoke to me. ‘Agust D’. The music was a lot about really personal times and dark side, the confusing life of being a musician you are and to go on as a person accepting that. And when I heard that, in my heart I knew I wanted to have SUGA on my album. I think maybe a lot of people expected me to collaborate with another member. Maybe someone who has a voice that’s airy like mine or maybe with RM because he speaks a lot English but for me, I always knew it had to be SUGA because he was so perfect for it. So I was so happy to have him.)
 
Q. 혹시 눈여겨보고 있거나 컬래버레이션을 또 하고 싶은 아티스트가 있다면?
(Do you have any artists in mind you hope to collaborate with?)
 
A. 올해 많은 협업들이 준비되어 있는데, 앞으로 함께 작업해보고 싶은 위시리스트도 길다. 드레이크(Drake)와 꼭 같이 곡을 해보고 싶고 숀 멘데스(Shawn Mendes)도 좋아한다. 그는 정말 좋은 사람이다. 그리고 신인 아티스트들과의 협업도 하고 싶다. 내가 처음 시작했을 때, 나를 믿고 함께 작업해준 사람들이 있었기에 오늘에 내가 있을 수 있었다. 마찬가지로 나도 누군가 젊고 커리어를 막 시작하려는, 내가 느끼기에 뛰어난 신인 아티스트에게 그런 역할이 되어주고 싶다.
(I have a lot of upcoming collaboration this year that will be coming out which is really exciting, but there’s still a lot of people on my wishlist. I really want to do a song with Drake. That’s a wishlist for me. I like Shawn Mendes a lot. He is the nicest guy. I really wanna branch out into some up-and-coming artists as well because there’s so many people who took a chance on me when I was starting out. I would like to do the same for someone young and new and who I think is amazing. So I’m looking for the perfect person.)

Q. 이번이 두 번째 공연이다. 다시 한국에 오게 된 기분이 궁금하고, 지난번 내한했을 때 가장 기억에 남는 것이 있다면?
(You just announced your upcoming show in May. Second time performing in Korea. How do you feel? What do you remember the most last time you performed here.)
 
A. 예~! (환호) 첫 번째 공연을 물론 기억하고 있다. 무척 떨렸던 기억이 난다. 방탄소년단과 협업하기 훨씬 전이었기 때문에 사람들이 과연 나를 알고 있을까 내 공연에 와 줄까 무척 걱정됐었는데 우려와 달리 멋진 공연을 펼칠 수 있었다. 2,500여 명 이상의 팬이 공연장을 가득 메워줬다. 가사도 전부 알고, 피켓도 준비하고, 팬들이 메이크업이랑 의상도 너무 멋졌던 게 기억에 남는다. 끝나고는 팬들과 만나는 시간도 가졌는데 정말 큰 감동으로 남아 있다. 이번에는 팬들도 그때보다 많아졌고 앨범도 2장에서 3장으로 늘어났기 때문에 더 기대된다. 나도 팬들의 기대에 미칠 수 있기를 바란다.
(Yeah! Yes, I do. I was so nervous. It was a long time before I collaborated with BTS and I was nervous that nobody was gonna come, or know who I was. Instead, we played a really amazing show. There was a couple of thousand people there, I think 2,500 maybe more. Everything knew all the words. Everyone had signs, and really cool makeup and dressed really cool. I got to meet a bunch of fans. I was so moved by my time. It really really really touched me. It’s part of the reason I have so much love for Korea and for my Korean fans. Now, it’s a whole other thing and I have more fans there. I have 3 albums instead of 2. So, I can only imagine what the next show will be like. I really hope to impress them next time.)
 
Q. 이번에 한국에 오면 공연 외에 만나고 싶은 사람이나 꼭 해보고 싶은 일이 있는지?
(Are there anything you want to absolutely do or try in Korea?)
 
A. 그러길 바란다. 매니저와 나는 한국을 정말 좋아하고 지난 2년여의 시간 동안, 한국에 친구들을 많이 만들었기 때문에 이번 한국 방문도 무척 기대하고 있다. 지난번엔 한국의 친구들과 놀러나가서 서울 구경도 하고 처음으로 소주도 먹어봤다. 정말 재미있었는데, 그 외에도 볼 거리 즐길 거리가 많으니까 경험해보고 싶다.
(I hope so. My manager, Anthony, and I, we love Korea so much and we made so many friends there now, in the last coupe of years.  It’s so much to fun to explore. Last time we were there, I went out with some friends and I got to see some of the city. I got to drink soju for the first time. I was really really fun. I think there’s so much to see and do, and I’d like to do that.)
 
Q. 마지막으로 이번 공연을 기다리고 있는 한국 팬들에게 인사 부탁한다.
(Any last words you want to say to your Korean fans?)
 
A. 한국 팬들을 많이 사랑하고, 지난 2년간 내 음악을 받아들이고 공감해준 것에 큰 감동과 감사를 느끼고 있다. 아직도 나는 보여주고 말해줄 것들이 많다. 팬들의 마음속 한 부분에 자리할 수 있다는 건 큰 행운이다. 앞으로도 내가 하는 모든 것들을 팬들을 위해 매일 계속해나갈 것이다.
(Just that I love them so much and I am so blown away and honor the way they embraced me over the past couple of years. I have so much more to give to them, and so much more to say. I feel so lucky to have new place in their heart in the past couple of years. I’ll keep doing everything I do for them everyday.)
